At this point it's safe to say if Apple ever does unleash the Apple Car unto the world, it won't look like what we've become used to driving. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple designer Marc Newson made it clear that he's less than thrilled with the current state of car design, calling the automotive industry his pet peeve.
"There were moments when cars somehow encapsulated everything that was good about progress," Newson told The Wall Street Journal. "But right now we’re at the bottom of a trough." Newson isn't alone in his criticism of the modern car design, as fellow Apple designer Jony Ive expressed his disdain at the current generation of vehicle aesthetics in his New Yorker profile earlier this year. "It is baffling, isn’t it?" Ive said of a Toyota Echo. "It’s just nothing, isn’t it? It’s just insipid."
The fact that two of Apple's most prominent designers hate the look of the modern car is nothing to sneeze at. While all indications signal Apple has a serious interest in cars, and the long lead times between the development and release of a car, there's truly no telling what an Apple Car will look like as its two top designers eschewing the modern car aesthetic. Hopefully if Apple does end up releasing a car, it will take a lot of inspiration from Jony Ive's favorite vehicle, the Bentley Mulsanne.
