Following countless leaks and endless teasers, Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones. The pair of S6 phones succeed the Galaxy S5, Samsung's prior flagship announced one year ago, and will be available across the world starting on April 10th. All four major US carriers plus US Cellular have committed to carrying both the S6 and the S6 Edge, while smaller carriers such as Boost Mobile, Cricket Wireless, and MetroPCS will only offer the S6. The Galaxy S6 Edge will be priced higher than the standard S6, though Samsung isn’t saying exactly how much either one will be at this point.
A month ago, I wrote about the iPhone's camera and how instrumental it is to many of the things that make that bestselling device so appealing. Today, Apple's most direct competitor, Samsung, has reiterated its long history of developing cameraphones and promised to deliver nothing less than "the future of cameras." In a post by Samsung's camera R&D chief DongHoon Jang, the company promises its 2015 flagship phone "will be intelligent and do all the thinking for users, allowing them to take amazing pictures under any conditions, without having to worry about anything more than just pressing the shutter button."
Are we looking at Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S6 smartphone in the image above? Perhaps. Maybe. Probably not. BGR points us to these photos from a case manufacturer that were recently posted to Weibo. As it so happens, they line up with a batch of images that came from another case maker last week. Well, they almost line up. The sensors on the phone's front are on different sides, and the case manufacturers seem to disagree on whether Samsung's logo will be embossed or simply printed on the back.
It's been nearly 70 years since George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984 was published, but some of its premonitions are starting to sound straight out of 2015. Take this passage in Samsung's privacy policy for its data-collecting Smart TV services:
Samsung's produced some very impressive laptops from its Ativ Book 9 line, and for 2015 the company is putting forward a new ultrabook that could be its strongest answer to Apple's MacBook Air yet. The 2015 Ativ Book 9 includes a 12.2-inch display that bests Apple's ultraportable in resolution at 2560x1600. It's also capable of getting super bright, jumping up to a brightness level of 700 nits when you activate its outdoor mode. You'll want to reserve that for emergencies though, since leaving it on surely eat away at the Ativ Book 9's battery — normally capable of lasting 10.5 hours on a charge — in no time at all.
