Less than two weeks after the bug was first discovered, the Wirelurker iOS malware has already led to three arrests. First discovered by ZDNet, the Beijing Bureau of Public security has announced the arrest of three suspects charged with spreading the Wirelurker malware through a third-party app store. Police say the program that spread the malware has also been shut down.
iPhone users are usually considered safe from malware, but a new report from Palo Alto Networks suggests that reputation may be about to change. Palo Alto's researchers have discovered a bug called Wirelurker, which the company says may have already impacted hundreds of thousands of users. The bug is primarily spreading through the Maiyadi App Store, a third-party source for OS X software in China, and researchers estimated the infected apps have been downloaded 356,104 times already. Once the computer is infected, Wirelurker spreads to iOS devices that connect over USB, rewriting existing programs on the device through binary file replacement. It's the first such bug that can infect iPhones that haven't been jailbroken, using the rarely examined enterprise provisioning system, intended to allow large companies to deploy software without going through the app store approval process.
Some people sure do work quick. Team Pangu has just made available a jailbreak for iOS 8.1—and it works on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and the iPad Air 2, along with older devices. The jailbreak though is currently limited to SSH only, and it doesn’t come with Cydia installed and available for Windows only for now.
Apple’s iOS 8.1 update is now available to download. The biggest addition is the new Apple Pay service which goes live today alongside iOS 8.1. Apple Pay will allow iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 3 owners to pay for goods within compatible apps by simply swiping a finger with Touch ID. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners will also be able to use their phones to tap card readers in participating stores to pay for goods using a combination of Touch ID and NFC. Apple Pay integrates into the existing Passbook feature on iOS 8.1, allowing you to setup and store credit and debit cards.
Apple is kicking off today's iPad event with the usual numbers showing the health of Apple's platforms and ecosystems that typically kick off Apple's presentations. Today, Craig Federighi has just announced that 48 percent of iOS users have upgraded to iOS 8 since it launched last month. That's down significantly from last year, when CEO Tim Cook said that about 64 percent of iOS users had upgraded to iOS 7 after a similarly short window. The launch of iOS 8 was plagued by a few pretty severe bugs, and last week some data showed that iOS 8 adoption was indeed lagging behind previous years.
