Eagle-eyed Apple customers noticed a small change in the App Store today; where Apple once touted apps with no immediate cost as "FREE," customers are now being made to tap a "GET" button. The new language shows up throughout the different sections of the mobile and desktop versions of the App Store and is the same whether or not an application allows in-app purchases.
Imagine you have an online service for chatting with friends, with somewhere in the neighborhood of 650 to 700 million monthly active users. Those users put up something like 2.5 billion pieces of discrete content every month: posts, photos, comments, and likes. That would be a pretty huge service, second only to Facebook itself in its sheer size and scope. You'd think the app for that service would be wildly popular. But you'd be wrong — because until now, that app didn't exist.
Super Evil Megacorp's mobile MOBA Vainglory was one of the stars of Apple's iPhone 6 keynote back in September, and has actually been in a soft-launch period since this past June. It was originally conceived as an iPad-only game, but with larger iPhones entering into the mix, the Super Evil folks made the decision to create an iPhone version of the game as well. Just a couple of weeks back, the final release date was revealed for the game and it would be staggered across regions, with Europe getting the game last Thursday while us here in North America (as well as South America, the Middle East and Africa) had to wait until tomorrow, November 18th for ourVainglory fix. Well, whether it was intentional or not, it looks like Vainglory [Free / Free (HD)] has actually launched just a bit ahead of schedule, and is now available in the US App Store.
Microsoft's Office suite for iPad, iPhone, and Android is now free. In a surprise move, the software giant is shaking up its mobile Office strategy to keep consumers hooked to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. Starting today, you'll no longer need an Office 365 subscription to edit documents or store them in the cloud. The move comes just days after Microsoft announced a strategic partnership with Dropbox to integrate the cloud storage service into Office across desktop, mobile, and the web. You can now download Office for iPad and store all your documents on Dropbox without paying Microsoft anything at all. Microsoft is also releasing a brand new iPhone app today, alongside a preview of Office for Android tablets, all with Dropbox integration.
Google's colorful new design style is making its way to Maps this week. With an update rolling out over the next few days, the look of Google Maps on both iOS and Android will be overhauled to fit in line with Material Design, a style that's been quickly making its way across Google's biggest apps. The changes here aren't dramatic — it appears that Maps still functions and is laid out largely the same way — but it certainly does appear to be a more stylish layout, and perhaps one that's easier to intuit as well. Though Google demonstrates the updated design on the iPhone and both Android phones and tablets, it doesn't specifically mention whether the iPad will be getting this design update just yet.
