Samsung's big news today was two big phones, but it has even more tech to come shortly: a new smartwatch that's going to be unveiled next month. At the end of its presentation today, Samsung teased the Gear S2, a circular smartwatch with an unfamiliar UI that looks like it could turn out to be a pretty stylish package. The Gear S2 will be unveiled in Berlin on September 3rd — that'd be a year to the day that we first took a look at the original Gear S, a big, rectangular smartwatch running Tizen. Chances are this one will be on Tizen too; that's probably a downside, but at least the faces look cool.
Samsung is officially taking the wraps off of the Galaxy Note 5 today, the latest in its flagship line of Note phablets. The Note 5 is best described as a blend of the Galaxy S6 introduced earlier this year and the Note 4 from last year. It's a familiar shape and size, and it's likely to be the best Note Samsung's ever made.
Google — erm, Alphabet — just broke a cardinal rule: "If you have a US startup called X and you don't have x.com, you should probably change your name."
To the surprise of almost no one who follows Apple, the company is planning to hold a big event early in September to take the wraps off its next iPhone. According to the well-sourced John Paczkowski of BuzzFeed, that event will happen on Wednesday, September 9th. iPhones are a shoo-in, as they've been introduced in this timeframe every year since 2011, but BuzzFeed also claims we'll see some new iPads as well as the long-awaited new Apple TV. The latter was originally rumored to be introduced at WWDC this year, but it was nowhere to be found; the rumor mill made it sound like it wasn't quite ready to go.
Microsoft announced some huge news at its Build developers conference earlier this year, revealing that Windows 10 can run reworked Android and iOS apps. While developers were intrigued by the news back in April, Microsoft has kept the tools under wraps until today. In yet another surprise move, Microsoft is open sourcing its key porting tool for iOS to Windows apps. Previously codenamed Project Islandwood, the Windows Bridge for iOS enters preview today and all the source code is available immediately on GitHub.
