It wouldn't be an Apple developer event without a big serving of fresh new software for developers to get stuck in to. Today, Apple announces the latest version of its Mac operating system: OS X El Capitan. Two big areas of focus for the new OS: experience and performance.
Yesterday at the Midem music industry conference in Cannes, Sony Music CEO Doug Morris confirmed that Apple would announce its streaming service at its Worldwide Developers Conference. "It’s happening tomorrow," Morris said, according to a report from VentureBeat.
Every June during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple previews some of the biggest software changes coming to the iPhone, the iPad, and the Mac. This year, you can expect a lot more. Though there are changes in store for iOS and OS X, the biggest stories of WWDC 2015 could be the introduction of a new streaming music service based on Beats and the first steps toward native, third-party Watch apps.
After several months of beta testing, Apple has released iOS 8.3 to all iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch owners today. The latest update includes a ton of new emoji characters; Apple has redesigned the emoji selector to accommodate all the new choices — which also include more diverse options. Aside from the big emoji bump, iOS 8.3 adds support for Siri in a handful of new languages, allowing Apple's personal assistant to operate in countries where it previously couldn't. Siri can also place calls that immediately start from the speakerphone rather than requiring users to toggle it on manually, and the update claims to improve stability, overall performance, and packs in bug fixes for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, third-party keyboards, and a host of other apps.
Apple's new MacBooks, announced earlier this month, have been upgraded with force-sensitive trackpads. Using the awkwardly named "Force Touch" technology, the pads can tell how hard you are pressing, allowing Apple to replace the old three-finger tap with a new powerfully pressed "Force Click." But the new tech doesn't just let Apple offer more menu options — other app developers can use the increased fidelity of the new trackpads too. Drawing app Inklet becomes the first piece of third-party software to make use of the new technology.
